Kitty is Full

Bob-tailed kitty
has a taste for bird
she climbs 'top the wood pile
out by the shed
she sniffs a bit
plops down and closes her eyes

She finds a board
to scratch on
rolls onto her back
stretches her legs out
shakes her head

A new flying cardinal
lands on a shrub
hops to the slider bench
kitty only looks, yawns,
and licks her chest...
Kitty must be full

Kitty, she acts very cute
always at safe distance
that is, how she goes,
She likes better
sounds from women,
Men scare her away.

Great Lonely

by Pat Darnell

On a runway lonely
Songwriter croons
crafts a tune
out of refrain

Evidence is in a tablet of stone
a very large and heavy
block of stone, a terrain
in hopes to be emancipated

Lady gained his heart
but forfeited her soul
she had to be at his side --
-- what was, she unanticipated

What, anyway, was the point?
her love could have levitated
a mountain, and its valley,
but there are only
so many fertile valleys

Then Song-man wrote,
wrote it all down,
but the tale became fragments,
restrained fragments of stone.

If Not Human

by Pat Darnell

If not human
would you know
winter, spring, and fall ?

If other than a man
could you tell
differences at all ?

If some other being
would you sing 'n let
your hands go free ?

If other than human,
is your calling,
Would you avoid Falling ?

If not human, then
would you work so hard
to give your fellow so much regard ?

If not human mate
would you mourn,
think, or, jubilate ?

Not a Revolutionary Piece

by Pat Darnell

Here a reluctant
authoritarian writes
not a revolutionary piece

but rather a cautious
series of tales
that are warnings

responses to glaring
holes in logic
and songs blaring

to ignite memory
of some things once
pleasantly democratic

or to declare
what you are going through
is certainly valid.

I Waited

by Pat Darnell

I waited here
for you to give
meaning to my words

Then when you
Came to call

My Spirit leaped
from the saddle
like the soul of Sal

It could wait no longer
beneath thunder rolls
nor 'neath squalls

It broke free...
My Spirit did for thee

Did you leap too
When our time began
At two journey's ends
And Spirits freely ran?

For My Heart

by Pat Darnell

For my heart
to be supple again
only a closed mind
is certain

Our moon is untrustworthy
different every night --
and we want to know
about our spirit and soul

Think ascent and descent
think light and screen
think ears, eyes, nose --
Think heart, mouth,and bestowal

To know our souls
requires a shrinking brain
Egoism thrown out the window
and tears flowing like rain

Work in Progress -- Dream of Flying

Why do I fly
in my dreams?
Floating over brick floors
around steel corridors

floating in atmosphere
teaching you how
so we can be together
flying

finding new clothes
swimming in large pools
expecting adventure
looking for work

Flying, a joyful expectation,
a joyous exhilaration,
how does it end?

We awake.

A Standard Bureaucrat

by Pat Darnell

I'm a full blooded bureaucrat
Living in an abstract
Married to an acrobat
That is that ...

All is right --
you may think, oh mighty eyes,
read on --

I'm sitting and rolling in the fat
one o' 'dese cats wants to masticate
an' force feed to the alley rats
... I'm not all right wid' that!

Me wife completely cracked
she pushed a heavy shelf and snapped
Tho' she can put her foot behind her back
She can not get past a dog'ass Corpor'at ...

Talkin' shop we learned that
Everything is wrote down in tracts
for insurable interest of Hacks'
... so just they can inscrutably file it away stat.

Now, I'm your standard bureaucrat
sweltering in a basement flat
foisting paper mountains on your back
... further inverting your sacroiliac.

Like me poor wife's sore back
She's sent on home with a rheostat
for keeping data -- ratt-a-tata-tat
So 'dey can write a new tax for that

On the sidewalk you don't spat ...
On the roof you don't wear a hat ...
in Spain ... you don't eat the cat ...
and you don't rat on the lowly bureaucrat ...

Gratified to Breathe

by Pat Darnell

Just a human being
exposed to all that is
gratified to breathe
fresh air
and occupy a small space

Skull, muscle, flesh
bread, truffle, and fish
gratified in repast
to eat
and present specified face

Shepherds cull their herd
and find pasture
past rocks and mountains
near springs
and nothing goes to waste

Haiti :: Recent Headlines

A new Prince
by Pat Darnell

Who is the new Prince of Haiti;
He claims the rumpled boulders
that were once a city?

Don't jump into the rivers
Keep yourselves clean
Don't panic.

A man with fever arrives
he is carried into the tent
he was living in a tent
in San Marc

In only hours
this Prince charged amongst us
it devoured many and left us grieving

He came at us from miles away
from upstream
from the clay and sand

This new Prince
is bigger than our president
bigger than our 1000 camps

bigger than Jan 12 earthquake
that claimed 300,000 lives.

This Prince ...
is bigger than God.

Emancipated

I was not rated
so I cannot be underrated
so of course...
never overrated likewise

When I say
the hole in my chest
is a fatal wound
bleeding from raising children

It should create impact
it is a symptom
possibly of disloyalty, ambiguity
from shelter people in their
profiteering

On my account; no festival please
Hope, no reveling
just surviving
making life one more day

No furnished bisque
no bouquets, no nosegay
only charity schisms
perchance escape criticism

Don't know why
Don't know when
Service became a job
and Public Works became a business

It has something to do
with water to live on
that Living Water promise
made reproachfully

I approach carefully
a common door
once I go through
I am emancipated, or so.

Maria Bermejo

You did a
D and C
on my heart

pierced it
and scooped it
out of its socket

How do I
introduce you now?
... friend of the family?

Was it
a genetic disorder
that made
me want you,
... at first?

From us
I lost confidence
as you brought
me not one luck

but, your jabs were
difficult. surgical
excelling in pluck

Boxing; you are champ
I never knew at all
such a scamp upstart
softened my glass jaw

Bittersweet, charge and depart,
your victory, my loss
Could you please
return my heart ...

Oh, on second thought
... just keep it!

Disturbed

... Maybe he was trying to
admit his inability to cope
with hypocrisy he sensed
in his church. He had been
preaching in his church
ten years. The experience
of seldom getting feedback,
at his intellect level, well
made him disturbed, mentally...

Genre Of Repair

Three final words of the twelve
might end in sermon with enough
convincing enough of enough
God Preservation Trust

Who then will preserve us?
With His gift of life
hard knocks and all
taught faith
and sincerity

Life gives life
what for Christ...
Man woman child
Country land

What each mind understands
is found in the air
water in stasis
our genre of repair

Agreement in unison
all saints standing there
good life rages on
In the genre of repair.

Shin Kickers Ear Pickers

The first time it happened
I remember clear
Very clear sound
like wind
and someone
playing my head bones
as instruments
notes bounced
side to side
top to bottom
making a salad
of my brain
making patterns
in my head

It happened
long before
stereo and 2%
headphones

Before Reese's Pieces
long before 8-tracks

But there weren't
any headphone jacks
in Mom's Hi Fidelity
GE cabinet turntable

Anguish I Feel

The anguish I feel
knocks out possibilities
knocks out pleasure
knocks out joy

The anguish I feel
has me pinned
has me stonewalled
has me astonished

the anguish I feel
derides me
denies me
imbibes me

Anguish
paralyzes
stupefies
immobilizes

no glee
no gladsomeness
no release

just torment
torture, 'n,
travail

Fathom This

Intellectuals have responsibilities,
But no powers ...
So here goes:
To make this year a new beginning
Every American wanting a new car
... go out and buy a Chevy
All frustrated academicians
... go online and start blogging
All parents who find hope
... encourage your children to prophesy and heal
"My God did we finally do it; really do it," says Charlton
... Stop Look Listen every morning.

Sorry Captain Harley

BP wants fish that taste best
Not fish with shark skin vests!

The Monarchy is silent
for the oil spoil toil
there has been no kingly recoil

Sorry Charlie:
BP made fish and fowl spoil
now "we" have to recoil
but 'dem sharks
eat anything

Fishin' hole is spoiled, boy,
Foist ahoy there, Charlie
the fishin' hole is spoiled
Give me a hard port turn
Captain Harley Finvalve Sir
Fin hoist that yardarm

What's it like down there
Charlie?
Hey, this is not a shark park,
Charlie.

Sorry Captain Harley
We want sharks that
taste good
not sharks with
good taste ...

Shark skin suits? Bah!
BP wants what's best
If it means sharks
in shark skin vests?

Fishin' hole is spoiled, boy,
Foist ahoy there, Charlie,
the fishin' hole is spoiled
Give me a hard port turn
Captain Harley Finvalve
Fin hoist that yardarm

Now there's a sport!

What's Up?

Kick back
put up your feet
stretch out your arms
put your hands
behind your head;
give out a big sigh
look up for the sky ...

Oops, there it is
a badly fit
ubiquity inside
a hung ceiling
in this patient room
turned waiting room ...
caged bird
... looking up

two by four drop down
tiles on tracks
that were powder coated
white, faded gray,
dusty 2 x 2 supply vents
twelve feet apart

Return air grilles
2 x 2 at far corner
EXIT sign over door
glowing

Canned lighting to accent
or excite us on floor
oh wait ...
a plastic ligustrum tree
was the target

Over there ...
baby poop color
plastic round
smoke alarm
and some other
alarm stuck up there

Round speaker
with broken plastic
round knob bezel
tight to the tiles

Try, try, try ...
... try to dream
beyond this scheme,
to beautiful skies.

      Humanism

      by Pat Darnell

      Like trying to sell
      life insurance to
      a Muslim

O r to collect long term healthcare
      stipends from Hindi's

      as if under cloak
      covering dimensions
      of space and time
      ...  innuendos
      Where is the joy?

      Where children are born
      and leavened to humankind
      to be treated rough
      in rites of passage
      meant to set them apart
      as what ... warriors?

      this nightmare
      feeds terror
      surmounts to blood terror
      and terror of death
      feeding terror again ...

      Many that will shorten
      their already short lives

      and choose very differently
      from their fathers' lifestyles

      regard other lifestyles
      other than
      trodden paths
      of descendants past

      of rivaling fathers
      those who are
      rodding their child
      to be canon fodder

      A basic question
      put before Protestant Hedonists
      and profiling Humanists

Who are you who were commanded
      to love God the Father
      and to encourage one another
      Until His return?

      Blue crab not moving
      4 candles --
      2 South, 2 West,
      on a linen blouse
      a lock of hair ...

      Still life on a curb
      Orlando, florida

      A disturbance call
      somewhere down yonder

      Did ya hear the call?
      Reckon we'll be smart
and git on down there ...
with no real Where to start.

      Maybe muster our minds
      Could have been passion
could have been economy of direct action
      Probably just eviction ...

      Yes, passion, I suspect
      luster now gone, nonetheless
      festooned , yes
      and garland of confess
      could be passions last request
      and these left clues

      Bocce ball and all.

Staying Naive is Best for all

      by Pat Darnell

      love is this stream
      rippling on thighs
      Spring water rushing by
      my hand around
      your torso
      in gentle hug
      bathing, listening
      looking through trees
      for love --

      love for you, this inlet,
      is this stream
      where we lie
      with ripples all about
      pushing your thighs

      love is not occupation
      boots nor dust, but
      younger stronger
      deserving and robust.

      Hurley-burly

      I am the sacred absent
I am a chill down your spine
      I vow trust, and love,
      But torrents, tears, are mine

      To give away and reset
      to fall away and beget
to miss out on evenings yet
bend toil all night in regret

long suffer'g spider weaves her net
works at night, her I should forget
that moment when I was present, yet
victim in rising water, with tetra ...
      [... glowing all around me]

      I would drown that night
If I did not love you
      shed instead my shaking ...
      Shakiness that you always hate

      I sent a message late
      and a text too early
      and the morning was met
      with quiet hurley-burly

      rewrite the grand traditions
or , How to not rewrite --
      and be all big-legged;

      Don't topple
      the chicken cart?

      Go land your cart
      and catch instead
      a mess of mud bugs

      Just how it's done
      we get it on
      you kno'
Jus' go on and on and on.

      Say: Hi Jane
      Say: Hygiene

      Say: Chicken, laddy,
      Say: Craw-daddy!

      a triumph ...
      or et un trionfo' ..?

      Demi, the Life Changer

      Pre-approved
      Junkily
      Corruptible passage,
      Others joined in
      With prevalent sin
      we all turned
      away from God
      But Demi found us
in the end, at the path
      of trodden wrath

      Demi, the Life Changer,

      She'd return for me
      when it's time

      All I had asked
      is where's my daughter?

... followed then all this free verse
      under bentwood chairs
      over expressed on oak desk
      to delight of rest

      I headed into the wind
      Southerly to a heading
      not marked as unknown.
      Only as a son born
to find his daughters and sons.

      I finally slept it seems,
as Demi, the life changer, crept
      back into my slumbering dreams.

Gimme a Line, Kid of Mine

      START:

      ... the worm knows
      about wormholes

      everything that ...
      is to know ...

      [ ... ]

      "So, I don't know
      I'd love to do that
      but I can't think of
      ' a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g '
      Right Now -- Dad."

      Poetry Geist

      by Pat Darnell

      Tell the water
      to be still
      Call the clouds
      if you will
      Tell light
      to sit tight,
      Tell time
      to stop ...
      ... on a dime

      Tell those
      who pray
      to call it a day

      When you feel ignored
      Don't blame the Lord

      Doesn't sound cricket
      worms with rickets
on a pitch field of dreams
      Being so thick, it
      sullies the stream.

      Trials

      by Pat Darnell

      To think, to even stir
      Required eternal
      And stop to say
      In turn, true to form,

      Someone out there
      Invented this
      Beside the stillness
      Individuals fell against
      The storm once made

      Could not they
      And all the rest
      Have said good day

      Eat Up

      by Pat Darnell

I been to the depression chamber
I been lower than a grass root
      I was ground and dappled
      Like pepper on a salad
Till my daddy give me fruit

He’d croon up to our rooms
‘Now hear this; ‘Now hear this
      ‘Sweepers man your brooms
‘Clean sweep down fore and aft’

      [Twheeee ieee wheet]

‘Clean sweep down before we eat!’

      This is so good
      This is so good that
This is so good that the
      The Navy eats it
Yeah, the Navy eats it up

I am tired from aches and pains
I been chippin’ paint all morn’
Hidin’ my chaw in my cheek till
      O’er the horn:
      ... swells: ‘Twelve bells’

I spit a wad in the leak...
      Yeah I spat t’bacco
      To stop the leak
      Until I return

      This is so bad
      This is so bad that
This is so bad that it’s good

So good, the Navy eats it
Yeah, the Navy eats it up... They do--
      The entire floatin’ Navy
At twelve noon, eats it up!

      It keeps us all afloat
How we care for our boat
We steam to Tuscany and Omaha
      We visit the China Sea
But what keeps us on our feet
Is three squares a day we eat

      Eat up old boy
      Eat up skullduggery
Scrape and grind; repeat ten times
The hull you plug her ye’
But at noon clean your plate
      ... you see
Eat up and clean your plate
      The Navy cannot wait

Gulf of Mexico; Oil Spill 2010

      by Pat Darnell

      Dirty juice
      nasty sluice
      and briney balls of tar

      fetch me a frog
      in this mutilated bog
      and refrigerate her

      calamity cross
      evil doer loss
      to thick to even stir

      condition dismal;
      crude oil baptismal
      broken bracken interred
      broken - then fix it
not broken -- then do not fix it
broken -- then do not fix it
not broken -- then fix it?
      Dull sewer dirty
      Damaged downed dinghy
      when was it discovered?

      Presto Chango

      by Pat Darnell

      Wonderful world
      change -- indicators
      Indicators -- lag time factors
      Lag times -- industry
      Industry -- increased gravity
      My history begins ...
      ... in the Civil War:
      ... the 1960's.

      That is, when I was
      Eight years old
      I was there,
      When Change got its name.

      ISS today:
      ... a change in collaboration
      ADA EOE:
... change due to a water fountain
      ENRON:
... change due to Oxley and Sarbanes
      Black Matter:
      ... change in Astrophysics
      Death of Crocodile Hunter
      ... change in journalism
      Ethanol:
      ... change in Petrochemicals
      SETI:
      ... change in Transparency
      Presto Chango
... a concept that follows SETI
      Photonics and Lasers:
      ... a change in light
      Crime and Punishment:
... Legal Beagles trail the field
      Fashion Industry:
      ... who can really tell?

      Lag Times:
      ... Space -- One
      ... Aeronautics -- Three
      ... Astrophysics -- Sixteen

      How many years left
      am I gonna live?
      So I can say
      Life is elemental;
      chemistry is dealt.

      Nun's?

      Impromptu Limerick
      by Pat Darnell

      One Response to “Inflatable Church”
Pat Darnell and Friends says: August 7, 2008 at 9:12 pm

      NUNS?

      Once I kissed a nun
      who came very undone
in the pew next to Bartholomew…
      Where I prayed

She glared at me in a state
that could scare diamonds off a snake
      and send me to hades
in the back of the Pope’s Mercedes…
[Turns out] — She was more interested in passing of the plate!!

      Dead ghosts, why'd they let go;

      a thousand Ancient forgotten souls

      and all their bones
